Resumen
Seven lumps of a high volatile bituminous coal from the Lower Kittanning seam, Dean PA, were placed inside sterile polyethylene vessels and were immobilized with epoxy at their bases. A variety of growth media were introduced, and some of the samples were inoculated with cultures of Thiobacilus ferrooxidans or an acidophilic heterotroph Acidiphilium sp. Other samples were left uninoculated as controls. Each vessel was scanned by X-ray computed tomography (CT) at the outset of the experiment and after a growth period of four months. Particular care was placed on the alignment of each vessel such that we could be assured of scanning the same internal cross section of coal at the start and completion of the test.
