Resumen

The aim of this study has been to determine the relationship between dynamometric tests and the functional capacity associated with physical condition in adolescents with moderate intellectual disability. The sample consisted of 44 schoolchildren (16.39 ± 4.5 years) of male and female gender, 25 men and 19 women belonging to 2 special schools in the Metropolitan region, Santiago, Chile. The maximum isometric strength was measured through manual grip dynamometers and trunk extender. Functional capacity was estimated through field tests, such as: the jump against movement, agility test of 4 × 10 m, time up and go and 5 repetition sit to stand test. For the statistical analysis, the Pearson correlation coefficient test was used to establish relationships between the aforementioned variables. Significant relationships (p≤0.05) were obtained between the dynamic tests of manual and trunk extensor pressure with the functional tests previously for all the samples and differentiated by gender. Manual pressure dynamometer tests and trunk extenders can be used as tools to estimate the functional capacity associated with motor patterns and the maximum isometric strength. The strength and its different manifestations must be considered as priority components, in the elaboration and prescription of exercise programs for the maintenance of the functional independence of adolescents with moderate intellectual disability.
