Resumen

The purpose of this study was to generate an explanatory model of infant development at one year of age that took into account characteristics of the family and the child. To this end, these aspects were studied in 57 low-income children from Santiago, Chile. The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (BSID III), the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF), and a socio-demographic survey were administered. Explanatory models were built through multiple regression analyses. The results revealed that language development is mainly explained by family and contextual characteristics. Cognitive and motor developments are explained not only by family and contextual factors but also by child characteristics. The findings and implication for public policies are discussed.
