Resumen

A woman's reproductive system functions in cycles driven by the cyclic activity of the ovary. Follicular growth and corpus luteum formation and demise in the ovary and the associated waves of hormonal secretion alternate sequentially with monthly periodicity from puberty until menopause. Follicular growth is associated with estrogen production and leads to ovulation and the formation of a corpus luteum. The latter produces progesterone until its demise, which causes menstruation. Sexual intercourse occurring close to ovulation may result in fertilization of the ovum giving rise to a zygote that implants in the endometrium initiating pregnancy. Menstrual cycles cease during pregnancy and resume near the end of breastfeeding. © 2008
