Resumen

A project to renovate the commercial area of the commune of Providencia to turn it into an urban sub center called Nueva Providencia has been planned since the late 60s. This project involves an important incentive for the creation of areas of public use on private ground leading to the development of a wide network of pedestrian walks and inside courtyards around the blocks. In the context of international experiences which provide areas of public use by implementing regulations of incentive, Providencia's project stands out due to its approach of the urban complexity starting from the pedestrian walkway and the coordination of specific interventions in a larger-scale project. Similarly, this project makes known important protagonists of urban thinking: Giancarlo de Carlo (TEAM X), Constantino Doxiadis (Ekística) and Alberto Cruz (Ciudad Abierta UCV) who, at the same time, nourish the managers of specific projects along the planning process. Public use space, the concept of pedestrianization and some classic building typologies linked to public space revisited by postmodernism. This article describes some of the conclusions of the research FONDECYT Initiation No. 11090407 (National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development) carried out from October 2009 to September 2011. "Producción privada de espacios de uso público. Los casos resultantes de la normativa de incentivo de Providencia entre los años 1976 y 2006" (Private production of spaces for public use. The resulting cases of Providencia's regulation of incentive between the years 1976 and 2006). Investigator in charge: Elke Elisabeth Schlack Fuhrmann.
