Effect of calcium on protein synthesis in reticulocyte lysates

Resumen

The effect of calcium on protein synthesis was studied using an endogenous mRNA-dependent translational system. Calcium enhanced the amino acid incorporation rate on reticulocyte lysates when the endogenous concentration of magnesium in the system was lowered by the addition of EDTA. The results obtained are consistent with our previous findings on the stimulation of protein synthesis by calcium, under suboptimal concentrations of magnesium.
