Resumen
This article reviews the reception and use of some stylistic resources of classical epic poetry, in the poems that sang the Arauco war, within the framework of the Spanish conquest of Chile in the sixteenth century. The analysis is based on the hypothesis that the use of these resources did not respond only to the classicist literary trend of the Spanish Golden Age, but to the discursive need of poets to provide intelligibility as well as epic and universal connotations to the events narrated in the context of the conquest and understanding of the New World.
