Abstract

This article proposes an approach to the construction of the Americanist thought of Bernardo O'Higgins from his first political education in Chile, Peru and, finally, in Europe. For this, we will analyze the multicultural character of his intellectual formation both in Chillán and in Lima, where he shared with young sons of leaders of indigenous and Creole communities, learning about their culture and developing a flexible character in the face of the complexity of the colonial world of the Ancien Régime in Latin America. In addition, we will review the liberal and enlightened education he acquired in London under the tutelage of Francisco de Miranda and the development of his commitment to American independence based on symbolism and the sense of an inescapable destiny.
