Abstract

Metallothioneins (MT) are a proteins family characterized by low molecular weight (6-8 kDa), high content of cysteine (30-35 %) and heavy metal complexation properties. Many functions have been reported, from a primary role of essential heavy metals cellular homeostasis (cytosolic pool of zinc and copper), non-essential heavy metals detoxification, inflammation and free radicals inactivation. Changes of MT concentration is a indicator of xenobiotic exposition, adverse environmental situations and physiologic stress. This modification can be applied both in clinical and working toxicology, and ecotoxicologic approaches. Environmental application is on experimental phase. This review has been focused on main evidences of metallothionein functions in cellular metabolism, both in stressed and non-stressed organisms. Despite higher number of very specific works on metallothionein its main cellular function remains unclear.
