Abstract
The main focus of this paper is to propose a general analytical scheme for Ernesto Laclau's Discourse Theory. To this end, Laclau's fundamental postulates in this regard are reviewed, together with some of the criticisms that have been made of his discourse, hegemony and populism theories. From these inputs, and drawing on discourse analysis, the author argues the need to consider instances prior to the discursive constitution itself as well as subsequent to it, which encourage its durability. Accordingly, a discourse analysis scheme comprising four general stages is proposed, and the dynamics of foundationalismcontingency and difference-equivalence in the discursive constitution are considered.
