Abstract
According to different social sciences and humanities approaches, humor fulfills specific functions at the social level: to present and highlight the relevant issues of the moment and to serve as a means of acceptable aggression when there is abuse from those higher up in the social hierarchy. Based on this idea, in this study we conducted an emotional and thematic content analysis of 73 comedy routines presented at the Viña del Mar Festival in Chile between 2000 and 2019. With this, we seek to show how humor reflected the social unrest conceived in those years that had expression in the so-called "social outburst" of October 18, 2019. The analysis showed that since 2000, there was a systematic and statistically significant decrease in the presence of positive emotions and an increase in negative ones, and that the latter was related to the presence of topics related to justice. Likewise, the increase in negative emotions and the decrease in positive ones correlated with lower trust in the judicial system and Congress. Based on these results, we discuss the possibilities of finding an approach to social processes in humor and how it can condense discomfort in a socially acceptable way.
