A power converter which uses 6 bidirectional switches with turn-off capability to connect the three-phase source directly to the load is described. Each bidirectional switch is composed of two power MOSFET transistors working in the switching mode. The converter works with a high switching frequency; for this reason the harmonics in the load and source currents can be easily removed by small filters. The converter works as a controlled current source, and the frequency of the fundamental component of the load current can be higher than the source frequency (50 Hz) without affecting the total harmonic distortion. A reduction of the harmonics in the input currents is achieved by controlling their reactive component. The input currents of the converter are practically sinusoidal and they remain in phase with the source voltage independently of the amplitude and polarity of the load current.
