Abstract

In the present study, we investigate the relationship between different dimensions that define socioeconomic inequality and the rate of traffic accidents that occurred in the 34 communes of Great Santiago, Chile in the 2015-2019 period. First, global regression models are employed to explore the associations between the variables, and consequently, spatial regression models (spatial lag models, spatial error models, and geographically weighted regression) were used. Results suggest that the rate of educational establishments present a strong association with the rates of traffic accidents, particularly in communes with high levels of poverty. Thus, the results may support authorities in the resource assignment for road safety by prioritizing those communes in Great Santiago with inhabitants of medium-low socioeconomic segments.
