Abstract
Changes in the development of consciousness frequently occur in clearly identificable sequences that can be described as pre-conventional, conventional and post-conventional levels. Each one of these levels is characterized by specific patterns of being, feeling and thinking, acting and communicating. When the historical evolution of economic systems, and especially their key organizing institution of money, are mapped on the same sequence, some interesting insights arise on today's state of economic theory and on its likely future evolution towards a knowledge-based economy.
