Abstract
This paper compares subjective well-being in the regions of Magallanes and Arica-Parinacota with the rest of the regions. It makes use of the National Socio-Economic Characterisation Survey (CASEN), which includes information about quintiles income, age, sex and overall life satisfaction. Results show that subjective well-being was higher in Magallanes than Arica and higher than the rest of country, even after controlling by age, sex and income. Differences in well-being due to sex and income are lower in Magallanes, suggesting that a strong collective identity and positive emotional climate from this region lessens the impact of status and income asymmetries. This study contributes indirect evidence about the existence of a positive social or collective regional identity in Magallanes, which acts a protective factor for well-being.
